How to Clean Map Sensor

If you are experiencing MAP(Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor error codes ranging from P0105 to P0109 then simply cleaning the map sensor can fix the job for you or in the worst case you may need to replace the sensor. Bad map sensor symptoms include rough idling, hard starts, poor milage, or even no engine start. Cleaning the sensor is a simple process and does not require too much car knowledge. You need a few basic tools like a screwdriver, wrench tool, and electrical parts cleaner and the whole process does not take more than 15 minutes.

Safety First

Make sure your car is parked in a safe place. Turn off the engine and let it cool down to a normal temperature. Always use safety gloves while working with any electrical part. Remove the negative terminal of the battery to avoid any chance of an electric spark or shock.

Find Map sensor

Open the bonnet and locate the map sensor which is usually located on or near the intake manifold. If you cannot find the location, you can get help from the car owner’s manual. Some cars have MAF sensors instead of MAP and some have both sensors. If you are unsure about it then consult the vehicle’s manual.

Remove sensor

Inspect the sensor and its wiring visually. If you own an old car then you need to check the wiring thoroughly and if any damaged wire is found then you must repair it carefully. If the wiring looks fine then remove the sensor grip and use a screwdriver or wrench tool to remove any bolt or screw holding the map sensor. Now remove the sensor with one hand gently.

Clean Sensor and grip

Use an electrical parts cleaner spray to clean the MAP sensor and allow it to dry for a few minutes. Use a small plastic pipe, which is normally available with the spray bottle so that you can spray the targeted area well. Do not use water or detergent to wash the sensor. Clean the grip gently as well with care. Once the sensor and its grip get dry you can connect the sensor, tighten the screw, or bold accordingly. Check the sensor and grip connection, there should be no loose connections. Finally, reconnect the battery negative terminal.

Drive test

Start the engine and check for any warning light on the car’s panel. If everything seems smooth then drive the car for a few kilometers to test if the acceleration is smooth or not. If no abnormality is found then you have serviced and reconnected the sensor successfully and no need to replace the sensor.

Scan with OBD2

If after cleaning the sensor some abnormality like engine low power or instability remains there then you need to scan your car with an OBD2 scanner to confirm if it is related to the MAP sensor. If you do not own a scanner then you can take your car to the nearest mechanic to test for any error codes. If any map sensor code is found then you need to replace it with the new one. Always use genuine parts as recommended by the manufacturer.

Sensor Safety Tips

MAP or other sensors do not require service often, but it is a good practice to get them clean every 10000 miles it also depends on your driving conditions and habits. Do not wash the car engine with high pressure, as it contains sensitive electrical sensors that can be damaged with high-pressure water. Also if any sensor gets water inside its electrical system or its wiring then there could be a possibility of a short circuit. Always use the recommended spray to clean the sensors when required.
